Hernando County was established in 1843 and named in honor or Hernando Desoto, a Spanish explorer. The central portion of the county includes the county seat of Brooksville. Hernando County’s population growth has been explosive. BUT, there is still a rural feel to parts of Hernando County and there’s still “Room to Roam”. A new bus service, affectionately called “The Bus” has brought Spring Hill & Brooksville closer together with daily service.

With an average January temperature of 60 degrees, year-round outdoor recreation such as hunting, fishing, camping, paddling, hiking are just a few of the many recreational opportunities enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Championship golf courses, bicycle trails, and the Croom Motorcycle Recreation area attract visitors from well beyond the County’s borders.

Hernando County covers approximately 477 sq. mailes including the cities of Brooksville and Weeki Wachee. There are unincorporated areas too including Spring Hill, Ridge Manor, Bayport, Aripeka, Lake Lindsey, Hernando Beach, etc. The county stretches 37 miles from East to West and 18 miles from North to South.

As part of the Nature Coast, Hernando County is bounded by the Gulf of Mesico on the west and on the north by the Chassahowitzka Swamp and the Withlacoochee State Forest. Public land has been preserved in Hernando County.

Hernando County is located approximately 35 miles north of downtown Tampa. This trip has been GREATLY shortened due to the creation of the north-south toll road, the Suncoast Parkway.
As it exists today, the Suncoast Parkway extends from the Veterans Expressway, in Tampa, to US 98 near the Hernando-Citrus county line, a distance of 43 miles.
The Suncoast Parkway is a carefully planned and aesthetically designed modern highway. It includes a recreational trail, wildlife crossings, and extensive preservation of environmentally sensitive lands.
As a toll facility, it is part of the Florida Department of Transportation's Turnpike Enterprise. It has four lanes, and access is limited to interchanges located at major cross roads. Many secondary roads cross the Parkway without interchanges, maintaining the continuity of the regional roadway system.
